Liina Raud on “Growing up with an Immigrant Mother”
video + audio

Words:

Growing up with an immigrant mother” is about two children throughout the past couple of yours. The pictures of them are taken in everyday life, capturing moments of joy, sadness, anger, hunger, tantrums, sassiness, attitude, hurting, caring, helping, and loving. Eating dinner, going to and coming from school, wakeups and bedtimes, peaceful resting and hyper energy, role plays, reality, anxiety, and peace.
“In my photographs, I want to depict the life of children who grow up with single immigrant mothers in a country with no social security or close community. Moving to the USA has traumatized me, which will traumatize them and their children. But I have sacrificed my dreams so they can dream. I want to show through visual documentation how lucky and cursed, simultaneously, my children are.”

“After almost eleven years, I have found peace and acceptance that motherhood identifies me.”
